Amelia Island 2020 Auction Results

Compiled by Randy Leffingwell It’s time for Round 2 of the 2020 automobile auctions, during which we learn whether Monterey 2019 and Arizona 2020 were just blips or were full-on warnings of unpleasantness ahead. In advance of the weekend, it seemed some caution already was on display with just 47 Porsches offered from the three […]

24 Hours with Jacky Ickx

Road Scholars had the great pleasure last week to host six-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx. Jacky and his wife, Khadja, joined us for an evening soiree. Jacky regaled us with several stories about his racing days, his experience working for Enzo Ferrari, and wisdom gained from many laps around the track. Jeff Zwart, eight-time […]

Amelia Island Wrap up

The Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance 2020 was a great success with more than 300 cars and motorcycles attending the 25th anniversary celebration on Sunday, March 8th. The fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island were packed and any concerns about coronavirus did not seem to have a major impact on attendance this year. Guardians of Porsche […]

Scottsdale 2020 – Great Cars, Not Good Ones

With Scottsdale behind us, the first big car week of the year opened the season in which we can all look forward to the next time we automotive enthusiasts can be together. These may be meetings, dinner sit-downs, events, hours hanging out with friends, and auctions all crammed into a few days (for most) with […]

Road Scholars x Otto Car Club – Scottsdale Event Recap

During the Scottsdale auction week, we teamed up with Otto Car Club for an exclusive event with some of our closest friends and clients. Cocktails were accompanied by great conversation. “Should I drive my ’89 Club Sport”, “What does the future look like for our industry”, “Bizzarrini or Ferrari?”. These were just a few questions […]

2020 Scottsdale Auction Preview

Has it finally happened? Have there been so many auctions so heavily loaded with Porsches over the past decade that there are very few left to sell? That certainly appears as one explanation for the “Nothing to see here, ladies and gentlemen, please move along” consignment lists that have come from Bonhams, Gooding and Company, […]

We have had the honor to place many special cars with new caretakers this year but here are our top 5 of 2019.    1959 Porsche 356 GS/GT: Chassis #107411 “Ice Racer” Earlier this year we had the opportunity to place this unrestored treasure known as the ”Ice Racer” with its new caretaker. Chassis #107411 is only […]

To Concours or not to Concours? That is the Question

The Changing Times of Lifestyle Marketing, Activations, and the Future of Concours The calendar year for automotive events has become action-packed. There is an event happening, either regionally or nationally, almost every weekend of the year. Concours d’Elegance events represent a significant part of these annual events and can offer a wide gamut of experiences […]

A Tale of Two Turbos (Video)

Road Scholars restoration specialist talks about the two very special ’75 Turbos he completed restoring this year.

The Agony and Ecstasy of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

The Agony and Ecstasy was a biographical film that came out in 1965 starring Charlton Heston as Michelangelo in the Age of Enlightenment. Heston delivers a powerful performance and masterfully depicts the challenges Michelangelo encountered while painting the Sistine Chapel in record time for Pope Julius II. I’ve often wondered if Michelangelo recognized that he […]

Monterey Car Week is behind us

With Monterey Car Week 2019 behind us we can all go about our normal routine and business.  Per usual there were plenty of fireworks throughout the week, and plenty of opinionated articles written and released about the collector car market in general, the 1939 Type 64 drama, the demographics of buyers, etc.  I’m going to […]

2019 Monterey Auction Results

Bonhams, Gooding and Company, and RM Sotheby’s offered an impressive assortment of autos across the Monterey Peninsula. However the weekend was not without drama. Whether it was the auctioneer’s accent or a confusion on the electronic price signboard, one car soared—albeit briefly—to an unimagined price range. And then it didn’t.  As always, with our reports, […]

Monterey Auctions Preview 2019

Bonhams, Gooding and Company, and RM Sotheby’s are offering quite an array of Porsches across the Monterey Peninsula. They range from the very earliest one—the Typ 64 (ex-Ferdinand Porsche at RM)—through a good assortment of 1950s and 1960s 356s, a number of early 911s and 912s, a few 1970s-era Turbos up through the first 959 […]

WHAT’S YOUR MILEAGE TYPE?

As a guy walks out of the bar, he gazes silently at two dialed-in G body 1980’s 911 coupes that are available for sale. The first is a 1985 Grand Prix White over black 911 coupe with 19,000 miles and the second is a 1985 Grand Prix White over black 911 coupe with 106,000 miles. […]

Concours Restoration, Revisionist History, and Porsche's First Super Car

Over the years I have written several articles in which I have attempted to explain the difference between Concours restoration and other forms of automotive restoration work. To summarize, concours restoration work demands the application of keen craftsmanship, guided by the discipline of proper research. In other words, it’s the quality of the research and […]

SWEET SPOT

I’ll have the bitter chocolate over cork with black pin-stripe velour, please. If your thinking that’s the June flavor at your local Godiva store your wrong. It was a standard color combination during the fabulous Porsche 911 SC era. You were hooked at bitter chocolate right? Well, there is so much more to the 1978-1983 […]

The Original Carrera GT

Photos by: Brian Rozar In the racing car world, there are prototypes, then “production models”, and finally the highest “improvement on the existing art,” to paraphrase patent application language.  These are typically the last very few examples of an existing model, brimming with standard equipment that was optional on previous years—or hadn’t been invented yet. […]

Treffen 20th Anniversary

The best cure for a Luftgekuhlt-6 hangover was to tear out of LA; heading North up highway 101 and PCH to Monterey, California for the kickoff of the 20th edition of R Gruppe Treffen. I was one of the fortunate few able to experience the back to back weekend of air-cooled excess referred to only […]

The 29th California Mille Miglia

This journey began on a beautiful Bay Area morning. We departed the historic Fairmont Hotel and passed Grace Cathedral on Nob Hill in San Francisco. Approximately 70 vintage sports cars, stretching from stop light to stop light, filled the street with glorious echoing sounds. It wasn’t long—and maybe not long enough with those sweet echoes—and […]

Hill Country Rallye & Robins Rally

The initial thought was a 3,500 mile epic drive fest with 3 friends that spanned the greater part of the Southwest and California over a 9 day period encompassing 3 events in the process.  Not only put in the windshield time but do so as a Road Scholars ambassador, spreading the good word on what we are all about and slipping in some North Carolina Charm along the way.

Pushing North Event at VIR North Course (Video)

Earlier this month Road Scholars hosted the “Pushing North” event, an all-day on-track experience at Virginia International Raceway with some of our VIP clients. To accompany us we had pro-driver Mike Skeen on hand to offer insight and instruction on the best lines. The video below offers a glimpse into the day’s events.

The Sky Isn’t Falling (What We Learned from the Amelia Island Auctions)

The Road Scholars travel team attended the recent auctions at Amelia Island. We heard a lot of chatter about what the results mean for the collector car market. There were more than a few doomsayers who cited the number of ‘no sales’ and cars selling below their low estimates as signs of a declining market. […]

Scottsdale 2019 Wrap Up

Scottsdale proved to be an interesting kickoff to the auction 2019 season in several regards. As anticipated, there was a lack of European buyers in attendance and there was nothing to really get overly excited about in Scottsdale in 2019. For example, the high-water mark for the week was the 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB […]

The 964 America Roadster takes Charles back! (Video)

Meet our Marketing Director and the newest member of Road Scholars, Charles Stanley! Charles is passionate about all things Porsche, so we put him behind the wheel of our latest arrival the 964 America Roadster and here are his thoughts!

Arizona Auction Week: An Uncertain Market

It will be an interesting kickoff to the auction season in Scottsdale this week with a heightened sense of uncertainly during a partial government shutdown and the overall financial market volatility. Brexit and macroecomomic uncertainty have taken the European buyer out of the global collector car market, by and large. I suspect that there will be a […]

Road Conditions

The automobile has been an integral part of the American ethos for more than a century. It combines many American ideals: individualism, freedom, technological innovation, and the desire to continually go farther and faster. Thomas Jefferson was prescient in identifying three inalienable driving rights: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. LifeWe depend on our […]

Meet Road Scholars New General Manager – Phil Whitehead

I was born to be in the car business. My grandfather drove across the country in a 1915 Ford Model T with Edsel Ford. My parents met in Flint, Michigan, while my dad was an engineering student at General Motors Institute. And I grew up in Detroit during the golden age of American muscle cars. […]

March has come quickly and most of you know what that means – the first big event of the year happens with the always-exciting Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. It seems that this event gets bigger each and every year for the Porschephiles – the rarity and number of Porsches on the field is downright astounding. In contrast, it brings out tough competition to all judged classes.

The 550-0090 Spyder – Engine and Transmission Assembly (Video)

The Back Story: As you might recall in the middle of 2017, we had the pleasure of assisting with the  acquisition of one of most original 550 Spyder’s (550-0090) in existence for one of our favorite clients. Once it was shipped to our main campus, our service department performed a total mechanical service to ensure […]

GT2 EVOlution

Written and Photographed By: Brian Rozar When you think about Porsche in 2017 the first thing that probably comes to mind is Porsche’s latest and greatest release of the Porsche GT2RS. For the most part it has been the most highly anticipated “road” car of the year. It nearly broke the internet when the […]

Amercian Speedster

Written & Photographed by Brian Rozar  The 1950’s, a decade of prosperity, colored television, the beginning of rock-n-roll and an overall upbeat and exciting America. As for Porsche, it was the commencement of a legacy with the introduction of the 356. In 1954, Porsche took the 356 a step further and established Porsche’s racing heritage […]

Matt Farah drives the Cayman GTR

A couple of months ago we released our custom Cayman GTR build video on YouTube. To our surprise it received an honorable amount of views, in a short period of time, with the help of a few popular automotive outlet features. With the views came comments… but one question kept being asked… “When is Matt […]

1956 Porsche Typ 550 Rennsport Spyder

Photography by: Brian Rozar The Porsche factory launched its first definitive race model 550 Rennsport Spyder design in 1953. Only 90 examples were made; each with lightweight aluminum bodywork and a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Later production Spyder’s tipped the scales at 1,301lbs.  The engine was designated as the Typ 547, and featured four overhead camshafts. With an aluminium crankcase, the […]

The Last Speedsters

The 356 Speedster will always be a Porsche and cultural icon, much like the 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS. It’s an intrinsically cool design that will continue to transcend markets with each generation of Porsche collectors. The 356 Speedster is an outlier; attracting buyers who are not necessarily Porsche connoisseurs, but rather, individuals who are simply interested in making a statement. Because of its cultural resonance, the 356 Speedster has been owned by celebrities and featured in so many movies.
