1963 356B Carrera 2

The Carrera 2 represented the culmination of Porsche’s racing technology fitted into a road car package and the ultimate performance-first sports car in the 356 model lineup.  Beginning in 1962, the 130 horsepower, plain-bearing 2,000cc Type 587/1 engine was implemented in the Carrera 2s. These 4-Cam engines were the ultimate evolution of Dr. Furhmann’s legendary engine design. 

This rare annular disc brake Carrera 2 is one of 436 Carrera 2s produced for the 1963 model year and is the second restoration ever performed by Road Scholars. We purchased this car for our client in 2007 and performed a meticulous Concours restoration to its original color combination of Slate Grey with a red leather interior. 

The car had spent much of its life in California, so when it was stripped to bare metal both the body and chassis showed no signs of rust. After addressing any dents and dings, the finished metalwork was sealed, epoxy primed, and block sanded while checking the panel fit along the way before being painted in its original Slate Grey color. The original trim was completely redone; all of the proper markings on the brightwork are clearly visible. The correct-type four-cam engine had been built by a renowned Carrera specialist, so only fine details and proper tuning were required upon its return to the engine bay which features the original sound insulation. Chassis 120351 was ordered with the optional headlight stone guards (not installed) and headrest.

Shortly after its completion, the Carrera scored 297.1 points out of a possible 300 at the 2009 Porsche Parade and won the Zuffhausen Achievement Award. Two years later, in October of 2011 the car was chosen to be displayed at the Porsche Race Car Celebration at the Quail in Carmel, California. 

It has been sparingly driven since its completion and still presents today in excellent condition both mechanically and aesthetically, and is in need of nothing but a new caretaker.
