In 1948, the first Porsche 356 brought together performance, design, and engineering into a timeless, elegant package that has become one of the most iconic sports cars ever produced. The “A” version of the 356 was released during Porsche’s rapid growth both as a production car company and introduced numerous refinements and stylistic changes. The company’s success in motorsport contributed to the ongoing development and refinement of the 356, and the 1600 series engine was perfectly matched for the rapidly growing US market and provided just the right amount of power and performance for American roads. Nearly eight decades after its introduction, the 356 continues to captivate new generations due to the quality craftsmanship, engineering, and handling that has become a defining characteristic in all Porsche models.
This 1958 1600 Coupe was originally delivered through Max Hoffman’s New York City showroom in Meissen Blue with Red Vinyl upholstery and configured with U.S. specification equipment, as evidenced by a letter from Porsche to one of the car’s previous owners. Since its delivery in 1958, chassis 102854 has had four owners, the most recent of which has cared for and enjoyed the 356A for over 25 years. At some point in its life, the car was repainted and reupholstered to its present red on tan color scheme with tan square weave carpeting. The paintwork shows some patina, but overall the body and chassis are straight and the mechanicals are all in good working order.
This 356A would be ideal as an entry-level driver for a first-time 356 owner, as the basis for an outlaw build, or to be restored to its original Meissen Blue on Red color scheme.
