May Editor’s Note

With the First of May just past, the late spring/summer driving season is on us. And while the most public – and most enthusiastically watched – early 2015 auctions have entered history books, houses such as RM-Sotheby’s (with one in Texas on May 2 and another at Lake Como in Italy on May 23), Bonhams (Aston Martin’s in England on May 9 and Greenwich, CT on May 31), Mecum (in Indianapolis mid-May), and Russo and Steele (in Newport Beach in early June) are still busy through this month. And they are getting busier as their deadlines close in on consignments for the celebrated August Monterey events. With that in mind, our contributor Richard Newton walks you through the procedures and perils you will encounter as you consign a car for August, and he has plenty of sensible advice.

Randy Wells is back this month with another interesting collector and his car; we’ll suggest some books, and go for a ride with Kevin Watts. Finally we’ll take a look at the wisdom of strategic planning and purchasing as you expand your collection, whether you are buying from auction houses or private parties. Maintaining focus is key.

For next month, Richard Newton returns to advise us on how to buy at auction. We’ll take a look at a couple of interesting automobiles, and we’ll start to examine what the market has done to those cars we used to idolize in posters on our walls.

As always, we welcome your thoughts and comments.
