The Annual Monterey Porsche Auction Frenzy & Spectacular may have seemed a bit subdued around July 4th when we compiled the preview we published soon after that. Since then, consignees have emerged from their garages and the woodwork, filling out catalogs with all variety of interesting autos.
The obvious stars are David Gooding with a 1955 Typ 550-0053, Dana Mecum with a 1958 Typ 550A-0141, and RMSotheby’s with a 1957 Typ 550A-0116. All the cars have interesting, well-documented racing histories yet, as many of you know, these are capable, delightful historic tourers. It’s stunning to imagine that for perhaps $12-15,000,000, one could acquire a three-car 550 team. It seems the price 50-some years ago would not have had those final three zeroes. Ah, for foresight.
We have gathered the most accurate lot numbers we can for you in this issue, as well as estimates where they are available. Neither Mecum Auctions nor Russo and Steele had posted hammer price estimates in time for our August deadline so they remain we published as last month: Estimate not yet published.
In all, these five auction houses offer 134 Porsches, ranging from rare and spectacular to, well, simply pre-owned cars. It is possible some of these houses may add more cars before their last hammer falls. Good luck!
