Porsche 901 was the name originally intended for the Porsche 911.
At the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (Frankfurt Motor Show) in September 1963, Porsche presented its successor to the Porsche 356 as the 901.
It took several more months until the cars were manufactured for sale to customers.
Between September and November 1964, 82 cars were built and the 901 was presented in October at the 1964 Paris Auto Salon. There, French car maker Peugeot objected to Porsche using any three digit number where the middle number was 0, asserting ownership of the naming rights in key markets, and having already sold many models with that scheme. So, Porsche simply replaced the middle 0 with a 1, and called the car Porsche 911.
232 cars were produced in 1964 in total. The 232 is the quantity of pre-production and production cars starting with VIN 300 001 and ending with 300 232.
Both authors Tobias Aichele “Porsche Forever Young” and Jugen Lewandowski “Porsche 901” state that only 232 cars were made before production stopped on December 23, 1964. Furthermore, both authors agree that the first car of 1965 bore chassis number 300 235 as of January 4, 1965. The difficulty of verifying these early chassis numbers is made difficult because of the Factory’s reliance on hand written record keeping during this early period and the constant changes during the development and testing process.
This is the last 911 built in 1964 and is chassis 300 232. It was ordered brand new by the owner of P.C. Import Inc. (Porsche Car) Mr. Oliver Schmidt as his personal car. He would later become famous with his Scuderia Tin Can racing team the featured the Porsche-Elva.
P.C. Import was located in Northbrook, Illinois and was one of the seven Porsche distributors in the USA in the early 1960’s. Ollie as he was known ordered this 911 in light Ivory with a black vinyl interior. It’s one of earliest delivered 911’s known in the United States.

Craig Lewis from Columbus, Ohio owned #300 232 for thirty years. In the early 1980’s he bought the car from a manager of a local automotive service facility. Craig could not remember his name, but vividly recalls the man selling the car because he was about to get married. He sold the car to Craig with the original Solex carburetors in a box. Craig had spent time in his youth working in a local body shop and would do the majority of restoration on the 911 over a twelve year time period. He had the car chemically dipped and replaced the floor pans. Craig frequently drove the 911 and showed it in local car club shows over the years. Craig eventually sold the car to Road Scholars in 2012 and is now enjoying retirement. He professed that the #300 232 was really a labor of love over the years he owned it.
Chassis #300 232 still retains its original motor and transmission. Another distinguishing feature on 300 232 is the flat engine panel that differs in appearance from later cars in 1965. It also features a mostly original interior with seats, dash, door panels, and headliner in wonderful condition. There are believed to be 45 known cars from 1964 to exist and 300 232 is the last chassis that was made. Making this already rare 1964 911 a very special Porsche indeed.
