One of our great clients in the UK and I like trading cars. John has the same taste in cars as we do and we have been known to B.S. over dinner, phone calls, and email about all sorts of different makes and models of classic cars. One such conversation involved a right hand drive 1975 Turbo we had, and since John lived in a nation where that was the rule of the road he was my best prospect for selling it.

This is the fun part. John, like most classic car nuts, does not have an endless supply of garage space, so the horse-trading began. We have the habit of looking at every car before we buy or trade for them. Since there is a rather large pond between us we had to rely on each other’s knowledge and taste. Cars, parts and dinners swapped, and we made it happen. It seems like we have a match!

John’s 1974 mechanically fuel-injected (MFI) Euro Carrera arrived and it was everything he described. This is an original car with one great repaint. It is an all-numbers matching coupe with 124,099 kilometers (77,600 miles) and it is virtually an excellent example. Porsche introduced these new G-series cars at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1973 for the 1974 model year. The Carreras developed 210 horsepower in “Euro” or “Rest of World” trim, and in this configuration, they accelerated from zero-to-100 kilometers (62 miles per hour) in 6.1 seconds and topped out at 240 kilometers (149 miles) per hour. The mechanical fuel injection system – carried over from the exclusive 1973 Carrera RS 2.7 models – made the non-U.S. 1974 version essentially the same car with some upgrades. (For U.S. Carreras to meet emissions standards, Porsche fitted the new Bosch K-Jetronic electronic fuel injection system. This and other changes reduced the U.S. Carrera to 175 horsepower.) New seats provided integral headrests, and the “accordion” inserts between the front and rear bumpers and bodywork were a brilliant solution to incorporating impact-resistant bumpers into the evergreen 911 shape. Non-U.S. cars were available with either the Turbo whale-tail type rear spoiler or the plain rear deck lid.

Luckily Ryan Snodgrass’s new book on the 2.7 Carrera [see the book and review in RS Magazine December 2015] is out and this makes the verification of the correct details and numbers much easier than it would have been just 6 months ago. The original 2.7-liter MFI fuel injected engine runs perfectly, the transmission shifts smoothly, and a complete check over and minor service will be all this Carrera needs for it to be enjoyed for many years to come. These MFI Carrera’s had been over looked for years, which made finding a great example very hard to do. The due diligence of a particular client makes this one of the best we’ve in the last 5 years. Thank you John, it’s a pleasure doing business with a Porsche nut like you!
