Shortly after the release of the completely redesigned 991.1 911, the Carrera and Carrera S cabriolets arrived. Despite growing in nearly every proportion, the 991.1 shared the same familiar silhouette and styling cues of its progenitors but was loaded from nose to tail with technology to make it smoother, quieter, and more comfortable than the 911s of years before. Porsche hadn’t forgotten the fact that the 911 is a sports car at heart, so for every bit of tech that was dedicated to improving comfort, an equal amount was implemented to ensure the 991 was the best performing 911 yet.
There’s no denying that the 991 is a big car, especially when compared to the 997 and older generations, but Porsche ensured that the experience behind the wheel did not reflect that fact. With Porsche Active Stability Management and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, the electronically controlled hydraulic anti-roll system paired with the electronic shocks and electrically assisted power steering system all work in tandem to aid the 911 to stay as parallel as possible to the pavement beneath it to exploit maximal mechanical grip from the 20-inch wheel and tire package. The electronic steering system dampens the bumps in the road without being intrusive and detracting from the mechanical sensation through the wheel to the driver. Porsche Stability Management and Porsche Torque Vectoring systems are also brilliantly integrated as to not be overbearing while greatly assisting the driver to remain in control in case of mistakes at the limits of grip.
Displacement rose to 3.8-liters and power grew to 400 horsepower, with a range of fuel-saving technologies for improved fuel economy. When paired with the PDK transmission’s launch control, the 991.1 Carrera S cabriolet could sprint to 60 in 3.8 seconds and cover quarter-mile in the low twelves. Impressive figures on their own, but when combined with the 911’s exceptional chassis tuning and driving aids the 991.1 really shines through the corners with precision and confidence.
The chassis structure was stiffened further at the B-pillar, rockers, and windshield frame, and the additional reinforcement greatly reduces the cowl shake over rough patches. The convertible top itself is more collapsable hardtop than traditional soft top. Three cast magnesium panels stretch from window to window beneath the outer cloth layer, and with the magnesium and aluminum hinges, the total weight of the redesigned roof assembly is just 79 pounds- no heavier than that of the previous 997. However, the total weight of the 991 cabriolets is 132 pounds less than the 997 cabriolets that they replace. Wind noise is significantly reduced inside the roomier cabin, and the fully mechanized top tucks away beneath the tonneau cover in just 13 seconds.
This 2012 4S Cabriolet was delivered new to its first owner and only owner through Sun Motor Cars Porsche in Mechanicsville, PA. It was sparingly used, and has accumulated just 8,500 miles from new but has been serviced at the appropriate time-based intervals and is up-to-date on all of its requisite services. It was configured in with the optional PDK transmission and finished in the classic color scheme of Platinum Silver metallic with a black cabriolet roof and a matching black leather interior. The Premium Package with 18-way adaptive sport seats was selected, which includes creature comforts such as auto-dimming mirrors, Porsche Dynamic Lighting system, heated and ventilated seats, and keyless entry. The Bose Audio Package, Sport Chrono Package, and the Porsche SportDesign steering wheel round out the interior options. As to not leave performance unaddressed, the previous owner also selected the aforementioned PDCC hydraulic anti-roll system, Sport Exhaust system, and SportDesign wheels with colored crests.
Ferdinand Porsche was always a proponent of open-top vehicles, and a quick through Porsche’s model history reflects the cabriolet as a staple from in the marque from its earliest beginnings. The 991 generation cabriolet brings together 70 years of Porsche’s principals into a model that can be comfortably driven and enjoyed on a daily basis and tackle the mountain roads with the best of them.
