The 2017 automobile auction season has begun and Bonhams, Gooding & Co., R.M. Sotheby’s, Barrett-Jackson, and Russo and Steele presented a vast number of Porsches for sale at all venues in the greater Scottsdale, AZ, area.

This year, we covered these auctions long distance, by live Internet feeds from the houses, and additional reporting from Hammer Price.com. All “sale” values quoted here are the price at the gavel and do not include buyers’ fees.

  • Lot 88 – 1964 Porsche Typ 904 GTS (highly original, well preserved) –Estimate: $2,000,000-2,500,000. Bidding started at $ 1,400,000 and surged quickly – within a minute – to $2,000,000. Then it stopped cold and sold for $2,100,000.

  • Lot 44 – 1952 Ferrari 340 America Spider Competizione – ex-factory team car – Estimate: $7,500,000-9,000,000. Sold for $5,800,000.
  • Lot 45 – 1956 Volkswagen Type 1 “Beetle” Cabriolet – Without reserve – Estimate: $40,000-60,000.  Started at $30,000 and soon sold for $32,000 in the room.
  • Lot 48 – 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB, second-to-last assembled – Without reserve(!) – Estimate $2,500,000-$3,500,000. This was a seller’s gamble – offering the car without reserve – that brought about a significant value recalculation that cannot have pleased 275 GTB owners or Ferrari collectors in general. Bidding began in the room at $1,300,000 and advanced at a near glacial pace to $1,450,000 and then it slowed further, inching up in $25,000 bids to finally sold for $1,575,000, nearly $1,000,000 off the low estimate.
  • Lot 64 – 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder (Belgian motorshow car) – No published estimate.  Bidding began at $6,000,000 and within 60 seconds had reached $8,200,000. From there it advanced at an ever slowing pace, taking several more minutes until it topped out and did not sell at $10,650,000.  This no-sale made it a not-so-good day for Ferraris at Bonhams in Arizona.
